Pinacoteca of Ceará holds an event to host an exhibition in honor of Leonilson
Exhibition runs at Pinacoteca do Ceará until May 26, 2024, with free entry. To host a special exhibition in honor of the Ceará artist Leonilson, the Pinacoteca do Ceará held a breakfast for guests this Saturday (9). The moment, which preceded the official opening of the exhibition, which takes place today (9), starting at 4 pm, was mediated by the director of the cultural equipment, Rian Fontenele, and the curators Ricardo Resende and Aline Albuquerque. The exhibition, which comes with a name full of enigmas, “Leonilson: Protective mountains and in the distance, volcanoes, rivers, hurricanes, seas, abysses and friendships”, is part of the cultural equipment’s one-year anniversary programs, which are taking place between the 7th and 10th of December. For those interested in viewing the works, the exhibition will remain on view until May 26, 2024. Present on the occasion, Nicinha Dias, Leonilson’s sister, spoke especially to Plataforma MT about the exhibition and the tribute to the memorable artist: “I’m super happy to be here, to be with Leonilson’s exhibition. The expectations are very high. For me, it is always very comforting to be able to participate in each of his exhibitions, which is something I always do.” Nicinha also pointed out that the exhibition is a tribute not only to Leonilson, who completed 30 years since leaving, but to the first anniversary of the important cultural facility in Ceará. Ricardo Resente, also in an interview with Plataforma MT, spoke about the choice of the name of the exhibition, which, at first reading, may generate confusion in people’s minds, but refers to the artist’s works. “Leonilson has a special characteristic in his works, as he uses natural elements or phenomena, what we call sensitive equivalence, to talk about feelings, state of mind, and it also works like a diary. The artist’s work, each drawing and each painting correspond, in some way, to something that happened to him on the day the work was done”, explained Ricardo. It is the second major exhibition dedicated to Leonilnso in Ceará, according to the curator, this time with 245 works on display. Ricardo emphasized that, although the artist’s legacy is short, as he only lived 33 years, the works he left behind impress art lovers to this day. “Leonilson is an artist of today. The issues he raises in his works still affect us”, he added. In turn, Aline Albuquerque pointed out that the exhibition also features works by other artists from Ceará who lived with Leonilson between the 1970s and 1980s. Born in Fortaleza, the honoree left Ceará very early, but always returned to spend his holidays, according to the curator, which allowed him to create bridges of friendship with people who also enchant and touch through art. Thus, the exhibition also features works by Ceará artists Batista Sena, Efimia Meimaridou, Luiz Hermano, Siegbert Franklin, Zé Tarcísio, Marcus Francisco, Karim Aïnouz and Ricardo Bezerra. The architect and scenographer Gisele de Paula was largely responsible for the expography of Leonilson’s exhibition, who also spoke exclusively about the work done at the Pinacoteca do Ceará. “I built a new space, which is for Leonilson here at the Pinacoteca, in this celebration of one year of cultural equipment. My work is based, firstly, on my own culture and my roots, and this exhibition comes not only as an explosion of colors, but also with many forms that build the path and trajectory of the artist”, explained Gisele. In addition to the opening of the exhibition this Saturday (9), starting at 4 pm, the public will be invited to a tribute to Leonilson, at 5 pm, in the Pátio da Pinacoteca do Ceará, with the reading of letters from the artist’s personal collection by some of your friends during sunset. The moment will also include a ceremony that celebrates the first anniversary of the Pinacoteca do Ceará.
